STEAM Workshop: AI Object-Tracking Camera Success!
We are thrilled to share the success of our recent STEAM Artificial Intelligence Object-Tracking Camera Workshop, a five-lesson program that sparked creativity and technical skill among 11 of our Secondary Form 1 to Form 3 students. This hands-on workshop, centered around the micro:bit and HuskyLens technology, empowered students to build and program an AI-powered camera capable of tracking objects autonomously.
Workshop Overview
Over five engaging sessions, we guided students through a journey of coding, electronics, and artificial intelligence:
Lesson 1: Introduction to micro:bit and basic programming concepts, laying the groundwork for hardware interaction.
Lesson 2: Exploring sensors and actuators, with students mastering control of motors and servos.
Lesson 3: Introduction to the HuskyLens AI vision sensor, focusing on object and face recognition.
Lesson 4: Training AI models to recognize specific objects, blending machine learning with physical hardware.
Lesson 5: Building and programming the object-tracking camera, resulting in a device that could follow a human face or object using button controls and autonomous tracking.
By the final lesson, students successfully programmed their cameras to rotate toward specific directions using micro:bit buttons and to autonomously track faces using the HuskyLens, keeping the subject centered in the frame. The combination of coding (using MakeCode or Python), circuit assembly, and AI model training delivered a comprehensive STEAM experience.
Student Reflection
We found creating a camera that could track faces to be an exciting challenge. Training the HuskyLens and coding the micro:bit to control motors was tough but incredibly rewarding. Seeing our cameras work for the first time felt like a huge accomplishment. This workshop deepened our passion for coding and inspired us to explore more AI and robotics projects in the future.
Impact and Future Direction
This workshop not only sharpened students’ technical skills but also nurtured problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. Watching our young innovators troubleshoot circuits and refine their AI models was truly inspiring. The success of this program highlights the value of STEAM education in preparing students for a tech-driven future.
