Geography

The Geography Department is one of the humanities subject departments in the Personal, Social and Humanities Education Key Learning Area.  Geography integrates the social and physical sciences and guides students to the interactions between society, the economy and the environment.  The department is also continuously enhancing students’ skills in processing spatial information, through classroom learning and field activities. All panel members are experienced Geography teachers with advanced degrees, who are able to help our students consider geographical issues, from multiple angles, in a systematic manner.

Junior Form

We aim at enabling students to develop an interest in geography and acquire basic geographical literacy and competency.  Students can be equipped with fundamental geographical knowledge and skills, to tackle problems and challenges in their daily life.  All modules in junior forms are either issues or problems related to Hong Kong, our country, our region and the world.  They are delivered to students with the enquiry approach, which enables students to master geographical concepts and knowledge during the course of investigation.

The Language-Across-Curriculum Programme is offered to support S1 and S2 students from CMI primary schools to study Geography in an improved, EMI learning environment. Learning materials have been designed with reference to the professional advice given by experts in this aspect.

Senior Form

The senior secondary Geography curriculum seeks to inculcate in students an in-depth understanding of the changing contemporary world, in terms of space and environment. Issue- and problem-based enquiry provides real-life contexts, which make the learning of geographical concepts more meaningful for students, and offers more opportunities for the cultivation of positive values and the development of a global perspective.

The compulsory part of the curriculum aims to provide all students with the fundamental geographical concepts, to help them develop a thinking and enquiry framework.  Meanwhile, the elective part helps to broaden the scope of study in Geography, with a greater emphasis on recent developments in neighbouring regions.  Students are provided with opportunities in different fields, to discuss and collaborate with one another in carrying out investigations and solving problems through enquiry learning, which helps students be more open-minded and self-directed in their own learning.
