English Language

The English Department is very active and proactive. Through self-analysis and monitoring, the department is continuously enhancing the programme it offers the students at Methodist College.

There are a number of unique features of our English Department, which we feel makes our English programme appealing and successful. Our dedicated faculty is diverse in educational and life experiences and many are advanced degree holders. All panel members are experienced English teachers who are able to offer support to our programme and introduce many new teaching strategies and provide authentic and innovative English opportunities for our students.

Highlights of the Junior Form English Program

The Pre-S1 Bridging Programme and the Language-Across-Curriculum Programme are offered to assist S1 students to have a smooth transition from CMI primary schools to an EMI learning environment. We also adopt the Language Arts approach in teaching English. Students are exposed to poetry, drama and other creative strategies that heighten their English awareness and bring the language to life for them. A variety of form activities are held, so as to provide a platform for enrichment of the extended curriculum. Examples include Readers' Theatre Competition, Drama Contest, Radio Drama Contest and the GEM Passport Scheme.

Highlights of the Senior Form English Program

As our students reach the senior secondary forms, they are well prepared to undertake and meet the challenges of the senior English Curriculum. Through the vigorous and challenging lessons, our students are committed to achieving the highest exam results possible. The elective modules have been integrated in our core curriculum, so as to expose our students to an array of learning experiences in pop culture, short stories, workplace communication and social issues. Reading buddies and some other enrichment programmes are also organized in F.4 to provide students with opportunities to serve fellow junior form students. F.5 students are invited to join a poverty simulation program organized by Crossroads Foundation, to increase their exposure to and awareness of world issues.
