Rising Wordsmiths Do Promisingly Well in Inter-school Championship ‹ BACK
The Scrabble Team is delighted to share their recent achievement in the “Headstart Cup” Hong Kong Inter-Secondary School Scrabble Championship 2018. The team was awarded 2nd runner-up in the tournament, with the tremendous effort committed by Julian Wong of 1R, Brian Po and Nicole Yu of (4B), who ranked top 10 among the top youth players in Hong Kong.

The three students joined with Calvin Ma from (5B) in the Masters Category of this once-a-year Championship on 3rd March 2018, competing with 9 other top schools in Hong Kong.

The team had a good start in the first round when it didn’t lose any points in the team ranking system, where the results of the best 3 players were counted. Yet, the team suffered setbacks in the second round, where our top 2 youth players in Hong Kong, Brian and Calvin, accidentally lost owing to poor tiles and racks. It put the team into a plight before the lunch break.

After some fine tuning by our coach Douglas during the break, the team was then back on the right track in the 3rd round, fighting back for a promising chance to compete for the title, as we were just behind the leading team by one point. The last round draw had Brian and Julian playing against 2 players from the leading team. The chance to win was to get both wins in that direct battle. Though both Brian and Julian have tried their best, only Brian pulverized his opponent while Julian lost by just a very narrow margin.

As our team coach Douglas Tsang commented after the tournament, “The team members have already done exceptionally well during the games. Comparing to the final results, I am more concerned about whether the new generation can succeed our seniors. Today, I got a positive answer. Stay tuned for our future games.”

Congratulations to our coach Mr. Douglas Tsang as well as our hardworking Scrabble Team members.
