Wordsmiths well-performed in HKSPA Association Cup ‹ BACK
The Scrabble Team is honoured to share our recent achievement in the HKSPA Association Cup 2017. Both the new generation of the team as well as their senior counterparts have done their best with 1st runner-up awards secured in both Senior and Junior categories.

On June 24, Hugo Ngan of 5B, Thomas Li of 5G and with the current Hong Kong Youth Scrabble Team members, Calvin Ma of 4B played in the Senior category and Esther Wong of 3R, Karina Lee of 2R, participated in the Junior category with another Hong Kong Youth Team member Brian Po of 3W. Both teams have surprised their fellow players in the morning session.

After a stunning start with a promising winning margin in Round 1, Thomas extended his unbeaten form in Round 2 and 3 by defeating two Youth Team members. It made him rank top in the morning session. While Hugo and Calvin were also on fire to get 2 wins each in the first three rounds, the team was able to lead the Senior category. On the other hand, Brian, as the top-ranked junior-secondary player in Hong Kong, kept his unbeatable form with 3 straight wins. Although Karina and Esther were green to Scrabble competitions, they still contributed 3 individual wins against tough players from other schools and secured the team with a promising position in the morning session.

In the afternoon session, Thomas lost to a former Youth Team player with bad tiles, despite his effort to chase back in several occasions. On the other hand, Hugo and Calvin performed stably to lead the team securing the 1st runner-up title after 5 rounds and Calvin also ranked 4th in the Senior category. As for the Junior team, though piped by his another Youth Team fellow right in Round 4, Brian picked up the rhythm and finished the tournament with a stunning win in the last round, ranking as an individual 3rd player, just lost by a narrow spread margin. As Karina and Esther didn’t show any fear when confronting some other experienced players, both of them got one more win to drive the team to rank 2nd in the Junior Category.

It’s not easy for newbies to join highly competitive tournaments and yet, Karina and Esther have done a great job. It is also a good demonstration to our fellow new members that hard work always gets paid. I believe that we will achieve more in the future.

Well-done Scrabble team and our coach Douglas!
